Shokz OpenRun Pro Review

I was given a set of Shokz OpenRun Pro’s by our designated headphone partner of the BTU, Shokz to try. The Shokz OpenRun Pro is the premium headphone on the Shokz line. So I was super excited to be testing the top of the line sound experience.

What were my thoughts?

I was impressed with the packaging.

The Shokz OpenRun Pro headphones came with their own protector padded protector case and easy-to-follow instructions. I particularly like the feel of the magnetic charging plug that effortlessly found the correct charging point on the Shokz OpenRun Pro so I didn’t have to fiddle around worrying that I was connecting the adaptor to the correct point.

The Shokz OpenRun Pro came about 50% charged, I then charged it for a further 20 minutes at home reading the instructions, then took the charging USB cord and connected it to my car charing port and completed the charge on my drive to Kangaroo Cliffs Stairs for some Sunday reps. The total time was about 35 minutes to be fully charged from the box. If the Shokz OpenRun Pro needs to be charged there is a RED light letting you know it is charging. So when I was driving along, I checked the Shokz OpenRun Pro and the RED Light changed to BLUE so I know it was charged and ready to go. The Shokz Open Run Pro also has a 10 min power charge, which will get you 1.5 hours of running. Fully charged the Shokz OpenRun Pro will keep the party tunes coming for an impressive 10 hours of battery life and water resistant. So don’t be afraid to sweat or get caught in the rain. They are not waterproof, you will need the Open Run for this feature.

Connecting the Shokz Open Run Pro was seamless too with my IPhone 13. I’d already tested the Shokz on a run with Katie Dall from Club KT, so I had to delete that Shokz before I connected the new one. But once the test Shokz was deleted, my phone found the new one within seconds. When the Shokz Open Run Pro is finding connection it flashes BLUE and RED.

So, how does Shokz OpenRun Pro sound?

The Shokz OpenRun Pro has the latest, 9th-generation bone conduction technology (called Shokz TurboPitchTM technology) and a refined design. I loved feeling the vibrations of the music against my earbones. It wasn’t quite like being in front of a speaker at a rave, but it was an uplifting music awareness experience. I enjoyed feeling the music as I ran. They quote on their site,

“Music is meant to make you move. OpenRun Pro make that happen.”

It’s true; I was flying along on the stairs and forgot about my breathing and pain. The sound provided by Shokz OpenRun Pro is crisp and clear midrange to high-frequency sounds, and the new Shokz TurboPitchTM technology delivers bass with incredible depth. Two units of CoreCushion (bass enhancers) are located inside the transducers, ensuring you experience every note, beat, and chorus while you listen. I’m a big music lover, and the Shokz OpenRun Pro did feel like a premium music experience.

Bone Conductor Technology Not Noise Cancelling Headphones.

What’s excellent about Shokz products is that they are NOT noise cancelling, meaning you have situational awareness. They feature Shokz proprietary bone conduction technology with an open-ear design that does not block your ear canal. I could hear cars and sirens, my coffee order and people passing me, or talk to people as I passed them. This means they are safer to run with on the roads and trails.

What do I think about the fit?

I have a tiny head, being only 5.2 female, I’m not a big person. Shokz OpenRun Pro stayed on without issue, slamming it downstairs with a ponytail swishing side to side, with a running visor. There was enough area for larger heads, as the standard fit is universal, but you can choose the smaller size. I didn’t worry about them at all. I forgot about them being on and just enjoyed the music.

Do I reccammend Shokz?

YES! They have been added to our Safety Briefing as our preferred headphones to use when training and racing on our course because of the situational awareness, making them safer for you than in-ear headphones. Plus, if you can hear your competitors around you, trail etiquette is way better; you can still connect with fellow trail-running BTU Buddies.
